Why Ghost sites lose rankings and conversions

Ghost is one of the faster CMSs by default: server rendering, clean HTML and sensible caching. Problems come from themes and embeds. A theme that loads a large font stack and a JavaScript bundle for a lightbox, plus a members and Portal script, plus embedded tweets, YouTube cards and newsletter signup forms on every post, adds up quickly on mobile.

Ghost’s SEO defaults are good, but the theme decides what actually renders: whether tag and author pages have descriptions, whether feature images get width and height, whether the JSON-LD Ghost injects survives a theme that overrides {{ghost_head}}, and whether the theme sets a canonical on paginated archive pages. Migrated sites also carry WordPress-era URLs without redirects in routes.yaml or redirects.yaml.

WebVitalist crawls your publication, measures it on a phone, and explains fixes in terms of Ghost admin settings, theme files and redirects.

Checks

What we check on Ghost

On top of the standard technical, performance, accessibility and copy checks, the report looks for the problems specific to Ghost.

  • 01 Theme JavaScript, Portal, members and embed scripts loaded on every post
  • 02 Feature images without width/height or responsive image sizes from the theme
  • 03 Tag, author and paginated archive pages: descriptions, canonicals and thin content
  • 04 {{ghost_head}} output: JSON-LD, canonicals and Open Graph tags intact
  • 05 Embedded cards (YouTube, Twitter/X, bookmarks) and their render cost
  • 06 Legacy URLs after migration and entries in redirects.yaml
  • 07 Font loading and render-blocking CSS in the theme
  • 08 Newsletter signup forms: labels, accessible names and placement

Fix Pack · $149

How the Fix Pack works for Ghost

Fixes are delivered as Handlebars for your theme (default.hbs, post.hbs, partials), as image size configuration in package.json, as redirects.yaml entries, and as Ghost admin settings paths (Settings → General → Meta data, tag and author metadata). Where a finding comes from a card or embed, the report explains how to lazy-load or replace it.

FAQ

Ghost questions, answered.

Do you support Ghost(Pro) as well as self-hosted Ghost?

Yes. Both are audited from the public site. On Ghost(Pro) the report skips server-level fixes and focuses on theme, settings and redirects.

Can you check members-only content?

No. We audit what an anonymous visitor and search engines see. Public post pages with paywalled sections are audited up to the paywall.

Can you fix issues in an official Ghost theme like Casper or Source?

Yes. Fixes are written against the theme’s templates; you upload the modified theme or add overrides. The report warns where a change might be lost on a theme update.
